The days before a ceasefire

The days before a ceasefire

A ceasefire was announced this week and the bombing and atrocities accelerated. Today, I saw Biden in his final interview telling the world how he discussed with his mate ‘Bibi’ that ‘Bibi’ shouldn’t really be carpet bombing civilian areas. The bombing of civilian areas is a war crime. The support of war crimes is a war crime. But it doesn’t matter that Biden was telling the world that he was complicit in war crimes as the US of A now sanctions anyone who dares to question the flouting of international law by the US of A or its friends.

At the same time, I saw a journalist dragged out of a White Office Press Briefing room as his colleagues smirked and another was escorted out whilst he asked for clarification on the US of A’s support of Israel’s genocide.

This week on social media, I saw the term “hours of revenge” used repeatedly.

This has happened before. A ceasefire has happened before.

I thought of the jubilation of the Palestinian people, of the happiness shared by my friend Oday at the announcement of the ceasefire. I was reminded of the hope that is instilled in the beautiful hearts of the Palestinian people and I was in awe.

I saw some footage yesterday of a young man shaking his sister’s beautiful broken body and saying, ‘Wake up sister, the war is over. Wake up, the war is over” and my heart broke again and again and again, but it is not my place to feel despair. In my privileged world, how dare I feel despair?

I have no idea of the will that exists in the hearts of the Palestinian people. Yet they still have hope after 8 decades of cruelty, dispossession, land theft and genocide. It is majestic and is forever a lesson in humanity that is sorely missing in the ‘civilised’ world.

The days before a ceasefire

The days before a ceasefire

are called the hours of revenge

it is then that the occupation

becomes even more depraved

as they punish the Palestinians

for thinking that one day they might be safe.

That these days before a ceasefire

even have a name,

shows how this occupation

has broken the rules before,

a pause, but they will continue

to take more and more and more.

It’s not war, its genocide,

they have never hidden their intent,

as for the Palestinians,

their land, they must not defend

and if they do, it’s simple,

all of them will be condemned.

The days before a ceasefire

are called the hours of revenge.
