Sara, celebrating 57 fabulous years with the Your Face, Your Story Project.
Sara, a road, a journey.
Sara travelled from Sydney for the Your Face, Your Story Project last Friday. As she travelled so far, we also included an evening at My Notes From celebrating her first book, The Sunbird.
Sara is the 3rd incredible woman to have had her shoot for the project and I cannot wait to catch up with her over the next week or so to go over her gallery with her. Between then and now though I could not resist sharing two images from her shoot.
When Sara and I first discussed her shoot, we didn’t even think about an outdoor location and the shoot was originally going to take place in the studio. However, after spending some time with Sara and realising the incredible journey that she is on, I wanted to take some portraits in places that celebrated this journey. On the way up from Sydney, Sara took a detour to Inverell as her father spent 6 weeks or so there when he first came out from Lebanon. Sara has just published her first book and is currently trying to get this in as many bookstores as possible which is a whole other journey. There is also the journey of family, and of navigating her place in the world as her kids prepare for their journeys as adults.
I asked Sara if she could go back in time and talk to her younger self, what would she tell her and she replied with, “When I was younger, I was overly concerned with what other people thought of me. So my advice to my younger self is the advice I give to my children: be authentic, and be proud of your difference, the things that make you, you. As Tove Jansson said, “The most important thing in life is to know your own mind.”
I have had a lovely two days with Sara and was thrilled she travelled from Sydney for this project and to also share her passion for her first book, The Sunbird.
The Your Face, Your Story Project is all about celebrating the lives of women over 40 and challenging the stereotypes of women and ageing.
