Numbers

poetry

Numbers.

I don’t understand why every person in the world is not screaming about the numbers that are coming out of Palestine. What is happening in Palestine, the first-ever live-streamed Genocide, yet also the most denied, is horrific. Countless international laws have been broken. Occupation is illegal. It is illegal to target civilian populations in time of war. Places of refuge should never be targeted. Apartheid is illegal. Bombing schools, and hospitals is illegal. Killing medical workers, aid workers and members of the press is illegal.

If our countries do not respect International Law, and the basic rules of humanity, then god help us with what happens next.

Apart from it being the right thing to do, the reason I fight for justice for Palestine, is because humanity is on the line. I worry about the future of this world for my children, and I would not forgive myself if I didn’t do something.

Our governments ignore those numbers, and the rules of international law whilst they play around with other numbers. The States have supplied $55 billion worth of weaponry whilst its population does not have universal health care and deals with homelessness and poverty on levels never seen before. In Australia, where we are dealing with a staggering rise in the cost of living, and an unprecedented housing crisis, our government awards a 917-million-dollar contract to a weapons company been banned by other countries in the world. Imagine what that money could do for the people in Australia?  Numbers.

The numbers tell the tale. The numbers should concern us all. Even if you can’t bring yourself to say Palestinian and prefer the terms Muslim, Arab or Terrorist the numbers are horrific, and the precedents being established should fill you with dread.

Numbers

Numbers, numbers everywhere,

numbers, numbers, we don’t care.

76 years of occupation.

325 days of genocide.

76 years of the fight for liberation.

76 years of being dehumanised.

40,000 lives officially taken.

55 years of apartheid control.

140 journalists who have been forsaken.

15,000 children never to grow old.

Numbers, numbers everywhere,

numbers, numbers, we don’t care.
