I will not

Writer's picture: Lara FlanaganLara Flanagan

Until I am occupied, imprisoned, tortured, or oppressed

I will not judge those who are.

We should be fighting for the occupied, imprisoned, tortured, and oppressed, not judging them or sticking our heads in the sand and saying, “it has got nothing to do with me.”

Humanity needs us to care and then it needs us to fight.

Poetry

I will not

I will not judge the occupied for their resistance to their occupation.

I will not tell the imprisoned how to break free from their chains.

I will not condemn the tortured for breaking their torturer’s neck.

I will not look away when the oppressed fight to be free.

I will not.

Tenterfield, NSW, Australia

I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of Tenterfield, the place where I call home, the Kamilaroi, Jukembal, and Ngarabal people.

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognise the continuing connection to lands, waters, and communities.

I pay my respects to Elders past and present.
