Angela, a Water Warrior

Angela, a Water Warrior

In Angela’s words:

A warrior is someone who shows great vigour or courage. They are a fighter, a champion, a person who demonstrates a winning attitude. So, when I was told I was a “Water Warrior” I had to laugh as I have a lifelong fear of water, and consequently, cannot swim to save myself.  In the water I am anxious, unsure, and panicky – definitely not courageous or a champion. Growing up, I spent many hours on the water’s edge watching family and friends frolicking in the ocean, pools and freshwater streams or dams, while I sweltered under the stifling and scorching Queensland sun. I am now 58 years old, and even though I still cannot swim, I was keen to give Metaqua a go. The promise of not having to put my head underwater and the use of flotation devices for support intrigued me.

I have only been participating in the program for a short time, but I am absolutely loving it! My confidence in the water is growing each week and the design and delivery of the program gives me a great sense of autonomy as I can do it independently or participate in a class at my own pace. I also enjoy the idea that many of the exercises can be adapted to suit my physical needs and ability.

Interestingly, I am finding the program is a great stress reliever. The feeling of jellyfish weightlessness as I glide through the cool massaging waters helps me to feel fantastic after each session both physically and mentally.  I’m certainly sleeping much better on the days I complete a session in the pool.

I am finding Metaqua a great water fitness program as it provides a wonderful cardiovascular workout while not building up a sweat. That’s always a bonus!  The gentle kicking and cupping of the water while doing different movements strengthens and tones muscle health and improves my flexibility while the support of the water reduces the risk of muscle joint injuries. It really is a fantastic all-round workout as it exercises lots of different muscles groups and engages my core without overexerting anything. I love that its low impact, yet effective.

Although I still don’t feel like a true water warrior, I feel Metaqua has certainly given me a “warrior mindset” as I face my personal fears with courage, strength, and determination. After each session I feel victorious as I achieve my goals and work at my own pace. In fact, I am very proud of myself! The program is rewarding, its simple and it allows me to exercise my legs, arms, sides and stomach without getting my hair wet. Sounds like a win, win to me!
